FAQ
Questions, answered
Everything about chat.cx in one place, from your account to your own API keys.
The basics
What does "chat.cx" mean?
"chat" plus "cx", short for Chrome eXtension: AI chat, living in a browser extension.
Do I need an account for chat.cx?
No. There is no chat.cx account. Sign in to each AI site with the account you already use, bring your own API keys, or use the on-device AI.
Does chat.cx replace my AI subscriptions?
No. chat.cx opens the real sites with your own account, so what you get on each one still depends on your plan there.
How is this different from just opening tabs?
The chats are the same. chat.cx keeps them together in one panel beside your work, so you switch with one click instead of hunting through tabs. Plus all the features.
Which browsers does chat.cx support?
Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and other browsers built on Chrome, such as Brave. Firefox is not supported yet.
Is chat.cx affiliated with any AI service?
No. chat.cx is independent. Other companies’ names appear only to describe the sites you can open with your own accounts.
Your own AI
Where do my API keys and chats live?
On your device. Your keys and your chats with your own models stay in the extension on this computer. They are never synced, and they go only to the AI service you connected.
Can I use a local model?
Yes. Add a model running on your own computer, for example with Ollama or LM Studio. It works without an API key.
Which AI services can I connect?
Any service that works with OpenAI’s API format, like OpenAI, OpenRouter, Groq, Azure, and xAI.
What else can my models do?
They can search the web, read web pages, and make images. Image generation asks you first.
Is the on-device AI free?
Yes. It’s the AI built into Chrome, so there’s no key, and nothing you type leaves your computer.
Privacy
Can chat.cx see my chats?
No. chat.cx has no servers of its own. Your chats go straight from your browser to each AI.
What happens to my data if I uninstall?
It goes with the extension. Everything chat.cx keeps is on your computer, and uninstalling removes it.
When something doesn’t work
I can’t sign in to a site. What do I do?
Sign in to that site in a normal browser tab, then go back to chat.cx. It works there too.
A site shows me signed out in the panel. What now?
Use Hard Reload on that tab. It brings your sign-in from your normal browser tab into the panel.
Something is broken. Where do I report it?
Post it on the feedback board or email us. Both are linked at the bottom of every page.
Pricing and license
Is chat.cx free?
Yes. The free plan is nearly the full product, with no account, no trial, and no card. It has up to 5 chat tabs and 5 bookmarks at a time.
What is the Early Supporter license?
A lifetime license for people who back chat.cx early, while it’s still being built. It unlocks every pro feature for good, including the ones that ship later. It’s only offered during this early stage.
Is it a subscription?
No. It’s a one-time payment, and you choose the amount at checkout. The license is yours for life.
How do I get my license key?
It arrives by email after you pay. Keep that email: it’s your proof of purchase and how you activate again after a reinstall.
Can I get a refund?
Refunds go through Creem, who handle the payment. A refunded license stops working.
